John Knox Village is located right in the center of the Rio Grande Valley, an international destination for birders admiring the migratory birds that funnel through this oasis every year. Natural spaces are scattered all throughout the Rio Grande Valley and are easily accessible for our residents to enjoy the local wildlife and well as the migratory birds. In particular, the World Birding Center, the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and the Valley Nature Center are all located just a short drive from John Knox Village and feature some of the best natural spaces in the region.
Iwo Jima Monument
The Iwo Jima Monument in Harlingen, Texas is a memorial to the marines who have fallen in defense of our country and depicts 6 marines raising the American flag during the battle of Iwo Jima in WWII. The monument is the original plaster working model from which the famous statue in Arlington was cast. In addition, one of the original 6 marines, Harlon Block, is buried at the monument.
Gladys Porter Zoo
The Gladys Porter Zoo is in Brownsville, Texas and is an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Visitors to this sprawling 31 acre zoo can find over 377 species of animal and 225 species of plant in a short ¾ mile trek. Some of the more exciting exhibits include the Western Lowland Gorillas, African Lions and new Aquatic Ecology Center with sharks!
Our Lady of San Juan del Valle
The Shrine to Our Lady of San Juan del Valle is one of the most visited shrines in the United States. The shrine is dedicated to “La Virgen de San Juan” and more than a million visitors make the pilgrimage each year. It was dedicated a National Shrine by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops in 1998 and is a local landmark appreciated for its beauty and celebrated history.
